Demulsifier selection for changing crude oil conditions

Separation

How to select a demulsifier for changing crude conditions

Begin with the crude, the process and a clear performance target. Changes in water cut, salinity, temperature, residence time or crude composition can shift emulsion behavior, so the screening plan should reflect the current operating conditions.

Start with the application

Before comparing candidates, bring together the crude source, water cut, salinity, operating temperature, residence time and current treatment. Record which conditions have changed and what the existing programme is no longer achieving. Also note interface quality, residual emulsion, separated-water clarity and any desalting or downstream constraints that affect the definition of success.

Define the evaluation

Agree the performance criteria before testing. Crude-oil quality and separated-water quality both matter. Compare candidate formulations at controlled temperature, dosage and settling time, and record separation speed, interface quality, residual emulsion and water clarity. Shortlisted candidates can then move to an application-specific assessment.

Connect testing to the field

Laboratory screening supports selection; field evaluation is a separate step. Review the injection arrangement and operating conditions when planning a trial, and record the results against the agreed criteria.
